Pepi
Since receiving a scholarship to study classical violin at the VCA Secondary School (VCASS) in 2008, Pepi has expanded her influences and passion for contemporary music through studying Jazz, Pop, Bluegrass and Oldtimestyles. Since graduating with a BMus in Music Performance (Improvisation) at the VCA in her home town of Melbourne, Pepi established herself as one of Australia’s up and coming contemporary violinists. At the VCA she studied with renowned multi genre violinists Nigel Maclean, ErkkiVeltheim and Tamil Rogeon, as well as Christopher Hale (bass) and Eugene Ball (trumpet).
Oh Pep! was formed at VCASS with classical guitarist, singer and songwriter Olivia Hally and soon morphed in to afolk/pop band that has been gaining a fanbase ever since. Oh Pep! have toured nationally since 2012 and internationally since 2014, recording three EP’s and two albums along the way. Their 2016 debut album Stadium Cake was praised as a pop/folk gem by the likes of NPR, KEXP, The New York Times and Paste Magazine and won Best Roots Album atThe Age Music Victoria Awards. Oh Pep! have performed with the likes of Billy Bragg, the Mountain Goats, Bernard Fanning, Martha Wainwright, Gregory Alan Isakov, Valerie June, Lord Huron and Lake Street Dive and performed at SXSW, The Great Escape, Glastonbury Festival, Woodford Folk Festival and Primavera Pro, amongst others.
When not performing with Oh Pep!, Olivia and Pepi record and perform oldtime music under the name Fat CousinSkinny as well as pop/punk band Good Option with acclaimed Melbourne singer- songwriter Angie McMahon.
As a multi-genre violinist/mandolinist Pepi has performedwith Deborah Conway, Gerry Hale’s Uncle Bill, The Morrisons, 8 Foot Felix, Jimmy Stewart, Dave Arden Band, Richard Piper and Aine Tyrrell amongst many other. As a session musician and arranger Pepi has recorded for artists including Sean Trischka, The Teskey Brothers, Alice Cotton, Matt Joe Gow, Emilee South, Aine Tyrrell, Gallie,Christopher Coleman Collective, Matt Joe Gow, Al Parkinson, Harry Bird and Barry Nisbet. Pepi was the recipient of the Invergowrie scholarship for female artists in 2010, a Youth Stars grant in 2013 and also the Ian Alexanderscholarship, which in 2012 saw her attend summer fiddle camps in Boston, Ohio and West Virginia and gave her the opportunity to take lessons with many contemporary violin/mandolin icons such as Darol Anger, AlexHargreaves, Bruce Molsky, Mike Marshall, Joe K Walsh,Christian Howes and Brittany Haas. This kicked off a love of bluegrass music and everything in between and in 2020 Pepi was winner of the Australian Bluegrass Scholarship. In 2023 she won first prize in the Battlefield Bluegrass Festival mandolin competition.
Since 2018 she has lived in central Scotland, and performs primarily with her original folk duo Rain Of Animals (w Theodore Barnad) and alt-country/bluegrass trio Good Guy Hank (w Donny McElligott & Theodore Barnard) and cologne based indie-folk sweethearts Stereo Naked as well with the Harry Bird, Fanny Lumsden, Luke Plumb and Barry Nisbet bands. Rain Of Animals released their debut album in late 2020, recorded in their home studio during lockdowns and mixed by esteemed Nashville engineer Sean Sullivan (Molly Tuttle, Sturgill Simpson). They have since toured the UK, EU and Australia and New Zealand multiple times and received regular NPR and BBC radio play. Good Guy Hank’s first EP was released in 2022 and they have since toured the EU and UK regularly. They released their debut album in 24’ to high acclaim from the likes of Celtic Music Radio and BBC Scotland. Rain Of Animals are due to release their sophomore album in 2026 with a full band including drums and saxophone.
